My recycling June 19, 2010 by John Brouwer and his mom Grace

The way Francisco from the Recycling Yard weighed our stuff was interesting.
1. We have to put all the things in separate containers. (This is dirty work. All the lids have to be off, and some of the containers are dirty…EUCK!)
2. Francisco (his name is on the receipt) weighed our containers. Some were weighed on a flat ‘on the floor scale’ and others were on another scale that they had to lift the containers onto.
3. After they weigh the container full, they dump out the stuff inside into GREAT big bins.
4. Then they weigh the container again.
5. They subtract that from the first weight.
6. The amount left is what I got paid for.
7. The machine prints out a slip of paper that looks like a receipt. Well, it is a receipt, and it tells how much every measurement was.
8. I have to take that receipt to the office, and stand in line to get my money.
9. Every time I do this, I have to sign the electronic signature pad.
10. Today, the guy who gave me my money was C. Buck. His name is on the bottom of my receipt.

Here's some of the things from my receipt...and what they mean

CRV means these are containers (aluminum, plastic and glass) that people have paid a deposit on. When people buy them in the stores, the CRV price is not in the store’s listed price, but it is added to their bill when they check out.
We had aluminum cans CRV, #1 PET plastic CRV, glass CRV, glass-other, and #2 MDPE CRV.

We brought in non-CRV cans from things like soup, spaghetti sauce and things like that. Even though we had about 15 cans, Francisco could tell they did not weigh a pound, so he didn’t even weigh them.

It is good to recycle for the money, but it is even better that these things don’t go in the ‘dump’ or landfills. These things get used again for something new. It is good for our earth to recycle, so if you want your recycling to make a difference, and you live in my area, call me, and I will recycle your stuff!

I am making thank you cards for the people who are supporting me.  We took pictures at Cruizin' Grand on Friday nights.  We take pictures of the flames painted on the cars.  I love it!  I helped crop the pictures, and change the pictures, to be what I wanted!  I made copies of the pictures and put them on cards.  Here are some pictures.

What are people saying about this site?
“Being a parent of a serve participant, we so much appreciate all the very many people who make this mission trip happen. Whenever a missionary comes to speak at our church, or a mission group goes off to do what the Lord needs them to do, our adult child turns to us and says, "my Ottawa too?". For a person with disabilities to go on a mission trip and be able to minister to others is such a wonderful thing. As a parent, it makes me cry with thankfulness and joy. I too, hope that there will be more Serve opportunities across this beautiful country of ours.”

maybe your church will be the next to have a Special Needs SERVE!  Think about it!
